Stress busters!

By Kami Griffin

Stress is unavoidable. Like death, taxes, and bad hair days, it is a part of life that can overwhelm you if you don’t take steps to manage it. Working at home has it own set of challenges that those who work in a traditional office may take for granted: children, pets, and a blaring television are not the norm in a “normal” office environment. So how do you manage stress and still be on top of your game? By making time for rest and relaxation, even if it’s just in short breaks throughout the day. Here is a list of simple de-stressors that you can do to unwind and still get your work done on time.

1. Set your alarm so that you will be up and about 30 minutes before the rest of your family. Take this time to meditate, write in a journal, read the morning paper, have a cup of coffee, or do some yoga. By allowing your day to begin peacefully, and by doing something you enjoy, you will feel ready to tackle your day refreshed.

2. No time in the morning for a home cooked breakfast? Try stocking your freezer with pre-made pancakes that you can simply pop in the microwave. Or for a healthier alternative, keep plenty of “ready to go” goodies like fresh cut fruit, yogurt, pre-sliced bagels, or meal replacement bars available. By keeping breakfast simple and nutritious, you are keeping yourself calm and less distracted as you get you kids and your self ready for the day.

3. Your 9 to 5 office counterpart is allowed an hour for lunch each day, and so are you! Don’t make the mistake of working through lunch every day. Use this hour to get away from your desk, and go outside for a walk. Take the kids with you! Or if you need some alone time, trade babysitting with a fellow WAHM, and go do something extra nice for yourself like getting a manicure. Or stay at home and give yourself a manicure! The point is to get away from your work, away from your desk. Close the door to your home office, and ignore it for an hour.

4. Teach yourself the fine art of reflexology, or learn how to give yourself a mini massage. By relaxing your muscles, you are shrinking stress. If your kids are old enough, teach them how to do it too, and take turns giving each other a nice back rub or foot massage.

5. Aromatherapy works wonders on a frazzled brain. Purchase some oils, candles or potpourri in a fragrance that you love and keep it in your office. Take a few moments to inhale the scent when you feel stressed out. Lavender is especially soothing.
