Pretty Pasta Jewelry

Stuff Needed

  • poster paint and paintbrushes (optional)
  • pasta with holes
  • thin red licorice strings or shoelaces
  • food coloring
  • cookie sheet
  • several plastic or Styrofoam bowls
  • reclosable plastic bags
  • o-shaped cereal (optional)

Use a cookie sheet to keep the materials organized and as a place for the finished jewelry. Place a variety of different stringable pastas in separate plastic or Styrofoam bowls. Tie a knot in one end of a thin red licorice string, and have your child string pasta on the other end. Tie the knotted end and the other end together for the finished piece of jewelry. Allow your child to create additional pieces of jewelry in the same way.

Make colored pasta by placing some pasta and a few drops of food coloring in a reclosable plastic bag. Shake the bag until the pasta is completely colored. Place the colored pasta on the cookie sheet to dry overnight. As an alternative, the finished jewelry can be colored using poster paint and paintbrushes. Make sure the paint is thoroughly dry before anyone wears the jewelry your child makes. Children love giving this kind of jewelry as presents. For longer lasting jewelry, use shoelaces instead of licorice strings. For edible jewelry, have your child use 0-shaped cereal and licorice strings.
